KARATE STUDENTS DAZZLE AT DIAMOND

Students from RMA Karate Centres in Barrie dazzled judges at the 2009 Canadian Diamond
Challenge resulting in their bringing home plenty of hardware.

For some it was their first major tournament of the year and the ten students gave strong
performances for the judges with their proud instructors, Sensei Craig Ridout and Sensei Linda
Young, cheering them on.

White belt William M did an amazing job for his very first tournament placing second in kata and
third in sparring.  Orange belt Jacob M gave a strong performance placing third in sparring, fifth in
weapons and fifth in kata.

Fellow orange belt Codie M also did well placing third in sparring, fourth in kata and fifth in weapons.

Brooke Z who recently received her red belt did well with her new rank placing fifth in sparring
and was a finalist in both the weapons and kata divisions.  Older brother Tyler M-Z who recently
returned to training after an injury gave a strong performance placing second in weapons and fifth in
both the kata and sparring divisions.

Green belt Rachel P managed well despite a knee and ankle injury placing fifth in forms, sixth in
sparring and seventh in the weapons division. Jessica Coutu also a green belt did well placing first in
sparring, fourth in kata and fifth in weapons.

Small powerhouse Samantha M showed great improvement since her last competition showing
judges she meant business.  The purple belt placed second in sparring, second in kata, second in
musical weapons and fourth in the weapons division.

"Competition can be healthy when approached with a positive attitude" head instructor Craig Ridout
stated.  "Only a small percentage of our students compete.  It's not something our students are
required to do, however, if they want to compete or be part of our competition team we help prepare
them with extra training. Students who do compete have a great time because they find themselves
making lasting friendships and expanding their knowledge of the martial arts" Ridout continued.
